Someone who has signed up on the Donor Commitment Sheet stating that they will donate at your blood drive. Our experience shows that prospective donors who sign up in advance will be more likely to give at your blood drive. Their phone number and/or e-mail will help to schedule them once a date is set.
How do I decide between an In-House or a Bloodmobile bus blood drive?
You can do either one depending on the capabilities of your group. In-house blood drives require a minimum of 25’ x 30” of space (larger if you expect more than 65 donors). Small in-house blood drives (25-30 donors) need a room 20’ x 20’. You will also need to provide tables and chairs at your site. The Center will provide all other equipment.
If no place is available inside, the Center will bring one of our self-contained bloodmobiles. A bus is 40 feet long, will need about six level parking spaces, and can accommodate about 50 donors.
Don’t be shy – ask them. The main reason people give for not donating blood is that they have not been asked. Another option is to form a committee and have each person sign-up a certain number of donors. The Center’s staff has a variety of support materials to help you get the word out about the importance of blood donation. Also, if your drive is at work, make sure that you have the support from upper management so that your donors may give blood on company time.
It takes about 45 to 60 minutes from walking in the door to walking out. The donation process includes: a private medical-history interview, mini-physical, collecting a unit (about one pint) of blood and having refreshments.
Almost anyone in good health (no colds or flu) who weighs at least 110 pounds and is at least 17 years old. Donors should bring a photo ID and know their social security number. We encourage all donors to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Some medications, medical conditions or risk factors may be a basis for deferral. Speak to the nurse manager by calling 512-206-1108 if you have any eligibility questions.
